- Rachel Bilson as Emma Twist
- Tom Sturridge as Will Donner
Best friends while they were growing up, Emma and Will lost touch a long time ago—as far as she knows. Will tells this story to a man and woman who are giving him a ride to his home town. Upon reaching, he goes to see his brother, Jim. After seeing his brother, he goes to see his longtime friend Joe, along with his wife and son. He tells them that today or tomorrow is the day he will tell Emma that he love her. When her father gets sick, Emma returns to their hometown, trying to leave behind her complicated love life and failing career as a TV actress. Emma's boyfriend follows her home and confesses her infidelity to her father. Meanwhile, Emma and Will spend the entire day together, reminiscing on times passed until she admits her unfaithfulness and selfishness to her boyfriend, who desires to marry her. She later discovers Will has been following her around and asks him to promise her not to follow her any longer. Will complies then leaves town. Following the recent leave of Will, Emma's father dies. Emma goes to talk to Joe for him to tell him to tell Will that she is sorry for what she had done to him. Jim comes to Emma's home to give her a letter that was sent to him. Jim tells her that he is in San Fransisco performing at Fisher Man's Bay. She goes to San Fransisco to look for him and while she does this she reads the letter he had sent her. Upon reaching near the Bay, she stops and ask some homeless men if they had seen a man that juggles and wears pajamas. They say he is currently performing and she thanks them by hugging them and leaves to go see him. When she sees Will, she remembers all the good times they had and the showing off he did for her. When Will sees her he stops what he is doing and moves on to the next stunt. He shows off for her by playing with sticks and lights them on fire showing off for her further. He finishes what he is doing and drops his hat for people to drop money in it, when he walks over to Emma he affectionately asks her: "Are you following me?" and she laughs.
